List of Recent Word Documents not showing up in Task Bar or Start Menu
This morning I had a user having issues with there recent documents not showing in Start Menu. I did some digging around and it seems the recent documents creates a cache storage location within “AutomaticDestinations” folder. Believe it or not, these files can be corrupted at times.
To resolve and fix the issue, follow these steps:
1) Browse to the location: %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
Note: the folder ‘AutomaticDestinations’ is hidden, so coping and pasting it into your search bar should take you there.
2) Delete all the files whose size is 1MB or more. [I didn’t risk it, so I deleted everything inside the folder]
Note: If you cannot find any file sized 1MB or more then delete all the files. This will eventually remove the Jump Lists’ recent items for all the applications. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. If you delete all the files then ensure that the applications are pinned again to the task-bar.
3) I then rebooted the machine and test one of the Office application. Once I opened up a document and closed it the recent list started to work.
IT’S WORKING
Hey, Thank you so much
its working now
It Works. Thanks
I am having the same issue. 2013 never showed recent docs from task bar. I ran the command mentioned above, none of the files in the folder were over 1 MB, I deleted anyway and rebooted. No change.
I have to take a look at this and see how Office 2013 handle the recent documents.
This doesn’t work for Office 2013. Not sure why but after installation of it, it never showed recent documents ever. Not for Word 1023, not for Excel 2013. Everyone mentions the “fix” you mention but it doesn’t work for me. No recent documents on the task bar icon.
This doesn’t work. I deleted everything in the folder but the recent docs still won’t show for Word. Only Powerpoint
Have you tried rebuilding your office suite?
even recent folder is not available in the windows folder,i am using windows sp3,help me what to do
I was having exactly the same problem, and had not been able to figure it out. This solution worked. THANK YOU so much.
anytime. thanks for the comment
I’ve heard of skype, but I’ve never used it.
okay, please go to this site and download the software so I remote into your machine and take a look at your issue. please email me the password here bjt3chn3ws@gmail.com
make this is set.
1. Right-click on the taskbar and select “Properties”.
2. In the “Taskbar and Start Menu properties” dialog box, switch to Start Menu tab.
3. Select the option named “Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar” and “Store and display recent opened programs in the start menu”.
4. Click on the “Apply” button to save the changes.
Yes. That did not work.
do you use teamviewer? would like to check it out
No, sorry. I’ve never heard of teamviewer.
skype?
Unfortunately, we were not successful. The pinned documents are no longer pinned, and no recent documents show up. Even the little black arrowhead is gone. 🙁
have you tried opening a file and saving the file. then closing the file?
OK. I’ll give that a try. I’ll report back on the results in a few minutes.
Thanks. This is what the search came up with:

Is that the right stuff?
bingo :). delete it all and reboot your machine and opening a word document and see if it sticks 🙂
Yes. It looks like this (I don’t know if I found the right folder, honestly).

I am using a copy of MS Office 2010 that I bought separately and installed personally. It had been working fine for nearly a year until a few days ago.
okay, do me a favor and copy and paste this address into your run command. click on the start button and in the “Search programs and files” test box paste this %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations and tell me if it is empty?
OK. This is going to sound hopelessly naive (very nontechnical person here), but where can I find the run command?
no worries. i have to stop using techy terms :). https://dl.dropbox.com/u/84172904/10-20-2012%2012-39-29%20AM.png
Indeed, I am.
Can you send me a screenshot
Sure. It looks like this. As you can see, the pinned documents are still there, but recently opened and changed documents don’t show up like they used to.

okay, can you sure a picture of the automaticdestinations it’s weird that it’s empty? and is this office that came with the laptop or did you install it?
Hi.
I want to try this because I’m having the same problem, but when I go inside the AutomaticDestinations folder, it’s empty.
Any advice?

Fixed – thank you
You are welcome. I’m glad that it worked out for you.
