There’s another thing that I’d really like to do, too. I’d like a few settings to be the new default. For instance, I’d like the taskbar to be set to use small icons, I’d like the Run command on the Start menu, I’d like certain things done with how folders are viewed, with the Action Center and with Notification Icons. How can I accomplish all of that? I apologize for bugging youa about all this, one thing after another, and really appreciate your input and insight.
You should look into audit mode when you are creating your custom image.
Hey BJ. I know Audit Mode is what I want to use but I can’t get it working for me at all. I can get the system into Audit Mode so I can install stuff, uninstall stuff, set certain settings the way I want, etc., but I can’t seem to end Audit Mode.
Here’s what I’ve done. I’ve run Sysprep and have chosen the Enter System Audit Mode option with Reboot being the other choice. I click OK and it eventually reboots and I’m in Audit Mode. Great. I’m able to do everything I want to do, but then the question is how do I end Audit Mode?
One way I read to do this was to run Sysprep again and choose the option “Enter System Out-of-Box Experience”, select Generalize since I want to use this image on various different systems, and shutdown from the Shutdown Options.
I tried that but got the same result – none of my settings were in place. The only other option I’ve seen for getting out of Audit Mode is to edit the registry.
How do you do it? I’m completely lost on this one, BJ.

the way you did the audit is the correct way. It’s strange that it didn’t work out for you. I need to test this out in my environment.

And iso image. There’s just the MDT 2012 server – no WDS server.
Thanks I’ll check that out and let you know. The MDT server is on a physical box. I have VirtualBox installed on the physical MDT server and the vm I created as the reference PC resides on the physical MDT server.
are you booting into your MDT server by an ISO boot image or using WDS?
I just tried it again and this time left it set to be in a workgroup instead of specifying a domain I want it to join and the imaging completed without any errors! Thanks for pointing that out.
Now what I’d like to do is things just like that through the TS, joining a domain. Do I need to do that in the TS or edit the unattend.xml or customsettings.ini file?
You could do it in the TS or in the unattend.xml. Come to think of it, I haven’t done a video with adding a computer to a domain and using MDT. I will do this video this weekend.
Okay, that’s exactly what I’ve done. The vm I created as my reference PC was never joined to the domain. I followed your steps in the video all the way through. That’s what’s so weird about all of this. Any thoughts? Let me know if I can give you any more details to help.
if you are able to get into the vm machine that you are trying to capture, try to locate the BDD.log file that will give you more information on what’s going on. You are housing your MDT server within a Virtualbox or vmware?
Hi BJ. Thanks for replying so quickly. I have the option to choose whether or not to join a domain in the Task Sequence. So when I boot from the CD I make from the LiteTouchx86.iso file one of the options in the GUI allows me to choose whether or not to join a domain. Should I just not choose to do that and everything should work? What do you think?
yes you can do it during that step of the deployment, but do no join your “golden” image to the domain then sysprep. customize your image – sysprep it – then when you deploy your custom image you can add it to the domain using the MDT GUI or a script on the task sequence process.
Hi BJ. Thanks for this great video. I followed you step-by-step and have run into a problem I’m hoping you can assist me with fixing. A little background info – I created an image in VirtualBox exactly how I want it and used that vm as I went through your steps in video step-by-step. The issue I’m coming across is that the image loads and the process completed, but it does so with 8 errors. Here are the errors:
FAILURE (7002): Computer is a member of a domain, should be in a workgroup when sysprepping.
Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = 2147467259 0x80004005
Failed to run the action: Execute Sysprep.
The specified protocol driver is invaled. (Error: 00001B5A; Source: Windows)
The execution of the group (State Restore) has failed and the execution has been aborted. An action failed.

I’m a bit lost as to why the errors are occurring, but this whole process actually has me a bit lost in general. 8)

Did you add this machine to your domain? For the sysprep application to run you need to have the machine off your domain network? If you want the machine to be part of a domain once the deployment is done you can add a task sequence within your MDT server to do that for you.
