OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 6 Release Notes

OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 6 The pre-release version of OS X Yosemite Preview 6 is out for developers to test out and submit your bugs to Apple to improve the operating system. As always, make sure you backup your machine before pushing out this update. Here are some notes and known issues of Yosemite Preview 6:

Notes and Known Issues

Installation Known Issues

– You cannot restore from a Time Machine backup of OS X Yosemite using the system restore utility on earlier versions of OS X. Doing so will prevent your Mac from booting. To fix the issue, boot into your OS X Yosemite Recovery Partition and run Repair Disk on the un-bootable volume.

Alternatively, you can run the following from a pre-OS X Yosemite partition:

⁃ /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>/usr/bin/afscexpand /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>/usr/sbin/kextcache

⁃ /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>/usr/sbin/kextcache -u /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>

 Family Sharing Known Issues

– Shared purchase history pages on Mac App Store and iOS App Store are disabled.

– Items already owned by family members must be re-downloaded from the Purchased page (not Store pages) to get them free of additional charge.

Gatekeeper Note

– Signatures created with OS X v10.8.5 or earlier (“v1 signatures”) are obsoleted and will no longer be recognized by Gatekeeper. To ensure your apps will run on updated versions of OS X they must be signed using the codesign tool on OS X v10.9 or later (“v2 signatures”). For more information see OS X Code Signing In Depth.

Handoff Known Issues

– After installing Developer Preview 6, Handoff icons may not not show up on other Macs signed into the same iCloud account. Rebooting the machines may resolve this issue.

– Using Handoff to pass an untitled TextEdit document between two may not work. Saving the document first and waiting 5-10 seconds before attempting Handoff my resolve this issue.

iCloud Drive Notes

– iCloud Documents & Data created with OS X Yosemite Developer Preview will be deleted from the servers during this beta period. Information downloaded and not deleted from your Mac will remain on your Mac and will re-sync after the data wipe occurs.

– Migrating to iCloud Drive will disable Documents & Data syncing for your iCloud account on OS X Mavericks and earlier Macs, as well as iOS 7 and earlier devices.

iCloud Drive Known Issue

– Some account password prompts may request the same login information several times before dismissing.

Aperture Note

– Only Aperture 3.5.1 will run on OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 6. Older versions of Aperture will not launch.

Aperture Known Issues

– Text and other UI elements such as checkboxes and radio buttons may be clipped or not display properly.

– Importing and exporting images, adjustments, and book PDF generation may be slower.

– Thumbnails and images may occasionally be out of sync when in Split Browser mode.

– Printing a book to Preview from the local printing dialog may result in an error.

– Adjustment and zoom sliders may not respond to single clicks and need to be dragged to operate.

– Leica Monochrom RAW images are not supported.

– The Auto-stack slider may be slow to respond.

iPhoto Note

– Only iPhoto 9.5.1 will run on OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 6. Older versions of iPhoto will not launch.

iPhoto Known Issues

– Text and other UI elements such as checkboxes and radio buttons may be clipped or not display properly.

– Application window may not be restored to its original size after exiting Full Screen view.

– Images shared to Twitter and Messages may be rendered at a reduced size.

Phone Calls Known Issue

– Notifications for phone calls may sometimes contain clipped text.

Safari Notes

– Subpixel rendering is now on by default for all web content. Websites or in-app web views with extremely tight design constraints may render differently.

Safari Known Issues

– Safari may stop responding while loading video when playing Netflix content.

– On certain machines, some forms of protected content, such as Netflix, may fail to play back. To resolve, hold down Option during the next reboot and select your OS X Yosemite partition.

Tools Notes

– Installing kernel extensions on systems running Developer Preview 6 may make your system un-bootable. To fix the issue, boot into the Recovery Partition and run the following:

⁃ touch /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>/System/Library/Extensions

⁃ kextcache -u /Volumes/<10.10 Partition>

– App extensions for OS X are always run as 64-bit code. You will need to build your extensions, and any shared frameworks they depend upon, to include 64-bit support.

Other Known Issues

– Some text may not be localized to the selected system language.

– Some languages may have clipped or misaligned layout.

– The login window may not display users. Reboot the system to resolve this problem.
