Installation using the OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility

Note: Installing this Utility will NOT prevent you from seeing all other Updates available to you. Back-up important information or clone your drive.

If you participated in OS X Mountain Lion Update seeding, you will still need to install the new version of the “OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility” as it is Mavericks specific.

  1. Download the “OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility”
from appleseed.apple.com/sp/
  2. Double-click the “OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility” and complete the installation. The Mac App Store will launch automatically.
  3. Locate the section with the Mountain Lion icon, titled “Software Update”, click on the “…More” link. Locate “Pre-release: OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 Seed” and click on the Update button to install the software; a restart will be required after installation

When a newer seed build becomes available, you will receive an OS X notification to install the update from the Mac App Store. Click the notification to begin the installation. You will continue to receive email notices from seedsu@apple.com and release notes will be posted in the forums. To stop receiving new seed builds in the Mac App Store on your machine, follow the steps below.

If you have already installed the “OS X Software Update Seed Configuration Utility”, choose Software Update from the Apple menu. Otherwise…

  1. Launch Applications > System Preferences > Software Update
  2. Look for the Option “Your computer is set to receive pre-release Software Update seeds”, and click the “Change..” button
  3. Click on “Do Not Show Pre-release Updates” (The Option will now disappear from the page. To re-enable, you must re-install the Seed Configuration Utility)

Note – Do not use this pre-release software in a commercial operating environment or with important data. You should back-up all of your data before installing this software and regularly back up data while using this software. We recommend that you install this software on a test machine. Reliable backups can be made using Time Machine. OS X Mavericks includes a recovery process that allows you to reinstall the OS and restore from Time Machine.
