Ricoh MP Printer Issue for Mac OS X 10.9
Apparently, not all printers will work with a Mac computer. I found this out the hard way this morning. I spent about 3 hours configuring and troubleshooting a Mac mini to work with a Ricoh Aficio MP 5002 printer. Everything seemed okay, come on it was simple - add the IP address into the LPR settings, pick your driver and your done. No!, it wasn't that easy for me. Every time I sent a print job to the printer I was getting an error of 91:error. I looked up "91:error" and this is what I got for the cause and solution:
I couldn’t understand why I was getting “printing was canceled by the auto job…”. Like, come on the user was printing fine on another printer but this printer was only for the Marketing department [which are all Macs :)] and I needed to take him out of the address book and place him into another printer for tracking purposes. Well, three hours in and I was like AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhh!!!! pulling my hear out of my head and trying to figure out what the issue was. I told the user that I needed to look into the settings between both printers. Now, keep in mind both printers are not the same model, but come on it’s a printer Mac or PC should be able to print with no issues, right?
I went back to my cave and brought up both printer’s settings and compared them. I noticed that one of the printers have the following option and it was allowing PostScript to print to the printer, which PS or PostScript drivers are well known and used for Macintosh computers.
The other printer did not have this option at all, so I had to give the user access to the printer with the PostScript feature enabled. What a pain. I still need to figure out how to get a Mac computer to print to a printer without this option. Back to searching and figuring it out.
Hi! Still no solution? Or have you switch to another printer? 🙂
Same problem here…
We were due for a new upgrade on the machine, so we switched it and got a model that worked for the iMacs in the office.
So even though I’m checking the box that says to notify me about follow-up comments, that’s apparently not happening. When you do get more info could you please let me know at mick.mueck@mac.com. Thanks.
will do. I will reply back to this chain of comments 🙂 and you will get the notification.
I have other different model Ricoh printers in the building (e.g. MP C400SR) that I can choose and they work just fine, but the Ricoh Aficio MP C4502 nearest to me yields the Error 91 every time. While the 4502 may in fact need a firmware update, it’s never going to happen where I work. I’m the only Mac user in the house and the printer works just fine for all the PC users. From IT’s point of view, never upgrading the firmware is sooo worth it to them because a Mac user gets to suffer :-(. That being said, if everything works for all the PC folks then it stands to reason a change to the Mac driver should also fix the problem.
that sucks to hear that a Mac user is being treated like that – not cool. Well, once I upgrade the firmware over here I’ll let you know if that’s the fix.
Were you ever able to fix this – I have the identical problem!
Still working with the printing company that deals with our printers. Their stating that a firmware upgrade is needed on the printer.
