Setting Up AD to Microsoft Entra with Cloud Sync

If you’ve been following my cloud sync series, you know we’ve been working towards provisioning Active Directory (AD) to Microsoft Entra using Cloud Sync. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process step-by-step to help you get started.

Start by logging in to your Microsoft 365 Admin Center. On the left side, click Show All. Then select Identity followed by Show More. Locate and click on Hybrid Management and then Microsoft Entra Connect. Finally, select Cloud Sync and go to the Agents section.

Next, head over to Configurations and select New Configuration. Choose AD to Microsoft Entra ID Sync as your option. If your agent is healthy, your domain should automatically appear in the active agents list. Leave Password Hash Sync enabled (if applicable to your environment) and click Create. After saving, check the notifications (via the bell icon) to confirm the profile was created successfully.

On the Overview page, you’ll see several options such as Scoping Filters, Map Attributes, Test Configuration, Set Properties, and Enable Configuration. For simplicity, I selected All Users as my scoping filter, saved the settings, and ignored the attribute mapping since default settings worked for my setup.

Once satisfied with your settings, click Review and Enable. This will display a summary of your configuration. Select Enable Configuration to activate the profile. After a brief processing period, you should see a green confirmation indicating successful setup.

You can revisit your profile to adjust filters, attributes, or check logs as needed. Some features like Insights may require additional licensing.
